Quick Answer

Among the occupations reviewed, judges are the highest-paid in Canada, with a national median of $387,006 a year. Specialist physicians are second at $311,297 and family physicians third at $232,227. Every other job on the list has a median under $200,000 a year, and the #9 jobs sit at $124,800, about a third of what judges earn. Figures are in Canadian dollars.

This ranking uses the national median pay for each occupation published by Job Bank, the Government of Canada's wage and labour-market site. A median is the middle value: half of workers earn more and half earn less. Job Bank publishes some occupations as annual pay and others as hourly pay. To compare them, hourly medians are multiplied by 2,080 hours (40 hours a week for 52 weeks) and shown as an annual equivalent. This list covers the occupations we reviewed, not every job in Canada, so it should be read as a comparison of well-known high earners rather than a definitive ranking of all occupations. See the callout below for the main limits.

Why are these figures not perfectly comparable?

Job Bank builds its wage figures from different sources. Judges' pay comes from 2024 administrative data. Physicians' pay comes from a 2023-2024 tabulation by the Canadian Institute for Health Information and the Canadian Medical Association, based on clinical payments from provincial and territorial medical plans, adjusted to remove overhead expenses. Most other occupations are hourly medians based mainly on Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey. Annual equivalents assume a 40-hour week all year, so they leave out bonuses, overtime and unpaid hours, and managers often work more. Treat the dollar gaps between neighbouring ranks as approximate.
