Quick Answer

In the IMF's October 2026 projections, the United States is still the world's largest economy in 2030, at $38.60 trillion, ahead of China at $27.08 trillion. Germany is 3rd at $6.15 trillion and India 4th at $6.13 trillion, only about $24.5 billion behind. The United Kingdom ($5.18 trillion) is 5th and Japan ($4.88 trillion) falls to 6th. The biggest drop in the top 20 is Russia, from 8th in 2026 to 13th in 2030.

This ranking uses the IMF's projections of nominal GDP in current US dollars for 2030, from its October 2026 World Economic Outlook, and compares each economy with its 2026 rank in the same edition. These are forecasts, not results. Because nominal GDP is measured in dollars, the IMF's assumptions about exchange rates and inflation move these figures as much as real growth does, and the IMF revises them in every edition.

India: 6th in 2026, 4th in 2030, and close to 3rd

The IMF projects India's GDP to rise from $4.06 trillion in 2026 to $6.13 trillion in 2030, an increase of about 51% in dollar terms, the largest in the top 20. That moves India past the United Kingdom and Japan into 4th place, and leaves it only about $24.5 billion behind Germany, less than 0.5% of Germany's projected GDP. A small change in the IMF's next edition could put India 3rd. India's figures are on a fiscal-year basis (April to March).

Gap between #3 Germany and #4 India in 2030

In the IMF's October 2026 projections, India's GDP rises from $4.06 trillion in 2026 to $6.13 trillion in 2030, the biggest percentage increase in the top 20, moving it from 6th to 4th. Six economies change places in the top 10: India, Brazil and Canada move up, Japan and Italy move down, and Russia drops out of the top 10 altogether. These are projections that the IMF updates twice a year, so close positions such as Germany and India, or Italy and South Korea, can change.

Economies are ranked by projected 2030 nominal GDP in current US dollars at market exchange rates. Rank changes compare 2030 with 2026 in the same IMF edition. The IMF lists Taiwan as "Taiwan Province of China"; it is included as an economy, as in the IMF data, and is 22nd in 2030, outside the top 20. India's figures are on a fiscal-year basis (April to March), while most others refer to calendar years. The IMF does not publish 2030 projections for a few economies, including Pakistan, Venezuela and Afghanistan; none of them is close to the top 20 in the IMF's latest figures. Gaps, ratios and percentage changes are calculated by Viszlyn from the IMF figures and then rounded. These are forecasts, not results, and the IMF revises them in each edition.
