Quick Answer

Anthropic is the most valuable private AI company in the world at $965 billion, followed by OpenAI at $852 billion — together the two labs account for roughly 82% of the combined $2.23 trillion held by this top 10. xAI is deliberately excluded from this ranked list; see below for why.

Unlike public companies, private AI labs don't have a share price — their valuations are set by what investors actually pay for equity in funding rounds, disclosed after the fact through company announcements and financial reporting. This ranking uses each company's most recent confirmed priced private round available as of September 24, 2026 — some of those rounds are only weeks old, while others (like Safe Superintelligence's) are over a year old simply because no newer priced round has happened since.

A note on xAI

xAI isn't on this list because it no longer exists as a standalone private company. xAI was combined with SpaceX in February 2026, and SpaceX subsequently became publicly traded in June 2026. The resulting company is no longer comparable to the privately held, AI-focused companies ranked here.

Ranked #10 to #1

10

Physical Intelligence

Valuation:
$11B
Category:
Robotics / Embodied AI
Revenue sources:
Venture funding

Physical Intelligence is betting that embodied AI — robots that can learn general-purpose physical tasks — is the next platform shift after chatbots.

Physical Intelligence was reported to be in talks for roughly $1 billion at a valuation above $11 billion in March 2026, a deal that would have roughly doubled its valuation from the $5.6 billion round about four months earlier.

9

Perplexity AI

Valuation:
$23B
Category:
AI Search
Revenue sources:
Subscriptions (Perplexity Pro, Max), enterprise plans, publisher revenue-share

Perplexity's AI-powered answer engine competes directly with Google Search and ChatGPT, giving synthesized, cited answers instead of a list of links.

Perplexity's valuation has climbed roughly 190x in under three years — from $121 million in April 2023 to $23 billion in its January 2026 Series E-6 round. Nvidia has reportedly been in talks for a follow-on round above $30 billion, though that round hasn't closed.

Mistral AI

Paris, France
Valuation:
$24B
Category:
Foundation Models
Revenue sources:
Enterprise AI licensing, Le Chat subscriptions, compute rental

Europe's leading AI lab, Mistral builds open-weight models positioned around data sovereignty — letting companies and governments run AI on their own infrastructure rather than through a hosted black box.

Mistral's €3 billion Series D, which closed September 8, 2026 at a post-money valuation above €21 billion (roughly $24 billion) and was led by Samsung Electronics, was described as the largest-ever equity fundraising round by a European tech company.

7

Scale AI

Valuation:
$29B
Category:
AI Data Infrastructure
Revenue sources:
Data labeling, model evaluation, enterprise data infrastructure contracts

Scale AI evolved from a data-labeling company into critical infrastructure for training and evaluating frontier AI models.

Meta invested $14.3 billion for a 49% non-voting stake in June 2025, an unusually deep relationship between Scale and its largest customer-turned-investor — though Scale remains formally independent.

Safe Superintelligence

Valuation:
$32B
Category:
AI Research Lab
Revenue sources:
Venture funding only — no disclosed revenue or shipped product

Founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, SSI has one stated goal — building safe superintelligence — and has released no models, papers, or products since its 2024 founding.

SSI was valued at $32 billion in its April 2025 funding round, led by Greenoaks Capital. In July 2026, Nvidia committed a reported $5 billion strategic investment at or near that same mark, though the specific valuation terms of that later round weren't fully disclosed.

5

Figure AI

Valuation:
$39B
Category:
Humanoid Robotics
Revenue sources:
Venture funding, early enterprise robotics deployments

Figure AI builds humanoid robots aimed at warehouse and industrial labor, part of a broader bet that general-purpose robotics is AI's next major frontier.

Figure's valuation has grown roughly 15x since a $2.6 billion mark in February 2024, reaching $39 billion in a Series C round in late 2025.

4

Anduril

Valuation:
$61B
Category:
Defense Technology
Revenue sources:
Government and military contracts, autonomous defense systems

Anduril builds autonomous weapons systems and defense hardware, positioning itself as a Silicon Valley challenger to traditional defense contractors.

Anduril roughly doubled its valuation to $61 billion in a Series H that closed May 13, 2026, led by Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz.

3

Databricks

Valuation:
$190B
Category:
Enterprise AI Infrastructure
Revenue sources:
Enterprise data platform subscriptions, disclosed recurring revenue

Databricks stands apart from most of this list as an enterprise data-and-AI infrastructure company with real, disclosed revenue rather than a research lab burning cash on compute.

Databricks closed a $5 billion strategic round on August 13, 2026 at a $190 billion valuation — its second funding round of the year, up from $134 billion just six months earlier — alongside a disclosed $7 billion annualized revenue run rate, growing over 80% year-over-year.

2

OpenAI

Valuation:
$852B
Category:
Foundation Models
Revenue sources:
ChatGPT subscriptions, API access, enterprise licensing

The maker of ChatGPT, OpenAI has committed to over $500 billion in disclosed cloud and compute commitments through its Stargate initiative, and has filed a confidential S-1 as it moves toward an eventual IPO.

OpenAI's valuation has increased more than fivefold since October 2024 — from $157 billion to $852 billion after a $122 billion round closed March 31, 2026, with Amazon, Nvidia, SoftBank, and Microsoft all participating as strategic investors.

Anthropic

Valuation:
$965B
Category:
Foundation Models
Revenue sources:
Claude subscriptions, API access, Claude Code, enterprise licensing

Anthropic overtook OpenAI as the world's most valuable private AI company in May 2026, driven largely by explosive growth in Claude Code, its AI coding assistant.

Anthropic's $65 billion Series H more than doubled its valuation from $380 billion in February 2026, alongside a $47 billion annualized revenue run rate reported the same month — up from $10 billion the year before.

What the numbers tell us

$1.82T
Anthropic and OpenAI's combined valuation
82%
of the entire top 10's combined $2.23 trillion value

Just two companies — Anthropic and OpenAI — account for the overwhelming majority of value across this entire top 10. That concentration reflects how a historic wave of AI investment, roughly $255 billion in Q1 2026 alone, has flowed disproportionately toward the two frontier labs seen as most likely to define the industry's future.

Valuations reflect the latest confirmed private funding rounds as of September 2026

Company funding announcements and press releases, Reuters, Bloomberg, TechCrunch, CNBC

This ranking includes only privately held, AI-focused companies with a confirmed valuation from a disclosed, priced funding round — each figure reflects that company's most recent such round available as of September 24, 2026, so some dates are more recent than others (Safe Superintelligence's April 2025 mark, for instance, is over a year old simply because no newer priced round has happened since). Publicly traded companies with AI as one part of a larger business (e.g. Nvidia, Alphabet, Meta) are excluded, since market capitalization isn't directly comparable to a private funding-round valuation. xAI is excluded following its February 2026 merger with SpaceX and that combined entity's June 2026 IPO — see the callout above. Several figures required correction across multiple rounds of fact-checking against current sources: Mistral AI's and Databricks' valuations (both of which rose substantially in rounds many trackers hadn't yet reflected, with Databricks alone raising twice in 2026); a compounding-math error inherited from a secondary source that understated Perplexity's valuation growth; two instances of imprecise valuation-multiple language for Anthropic and OpenAI; and Physical Intelligence's funding round, for which we could only confirm reports of the company being in talks rather than a closed deal.

Figures marked as estimates are based on publicly available information and may vary from other published sources.
